Only some 1,393 of these cars were made with the rag top and are extremely rare.

This was probably the sweetest ride you could by in 1949. Imagine the looks back in the day, to drive such a sporty and luxurious convertible and these prestigious Lincoln’s were all of that and more. The convertible was the heaviest car Lincoln built, at over some 4400 lbs. The convertible was also the most expensive of the Ford family in 1949 at an astronomical cost of $3,948.00. She has all the goodies of her day too, a powerful flathead V8 that was pumping 152 bhp from 336 cid. She has a rare automatic transmission, power windows, power soft top and the latest in sound equipment for her day, a push button AM radio! Notice the full windshield, instead of two halves, this was a first for the car industry. This rare Lincoln will still run down the road at freeway speeds with no hesitation, she has no wobbles or creaks. This car is an all steel California car. She has been in a private collection in a controlled environment for many years.

Please keep in mind they only some 1,393 of these rare convertible beauties were built in the production years of 1949-51. Also the original, not a reproduced or replica, but the original 1949 Lincoln owners manual to the car will be included in the sale.

Although the 152 horsepower V-8 engine delivered only 8 miles per gallon, at the time, gasoline was selling for only 28 cents a gallon. With a dollar’s worth of gas one could pick up their girl and take her to the movies! The Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertibles were manufactured in 1949-51 and very few survive. When new the 4,419-pound car had a base price of $3,948. As stated it was the epitome of luxury and was by far the most expensive Ford /Lincoln on the market, almost 20% more than the rival Cadillac and one of the most expensive cars on the road.

This particular example is painted ‘Chantilly Green’ and has a power tan top and tan interior.
The headlights and the taillights were recessed into the fenders and the front wheel wells are crowned with large chrome gravel deflectors. There is no record of how much gravel was ever deflected but the strip of chrome has great eye appeal!
In that post World War II era, Ford Motor Company was developing an automatic transmission for the big Lincoln but it wasn’t quite ready. Consequently, the Ford-produced Lincoln has a General Motors-produced Hydramatic transmission with a shift pattern from the left of Neutral-Drive-Low-Reverse. There is no parking gear.

Finished in it’s original ‘Chantilly Green’ color paint with tan interior and matching tan convertible soft top with matching tan tonneau cover.

The original factory options of the car included: power windows, power soft top, original push button AM radio, whitewall tires, fog lights, heater and electric clock. The floor boards, trunk and all the typical rust-prone areas are completely solid and rust-free and the car has had no signs of any accidents – obviously an always garaged and cherished car since new from the looks of it!

The car looks extremely impressive in it’s repainted ‘Chantilly Green’ color paint and the interior is in exceptional and mostly completely original condition with only very minor imperfections noticeable upon close inspection! All the chromework is also in very good condition and the original spare wheel with it’s jack is in the trunk. The original matching # 336/152HP engine is extremely strong and powerful and this particular car drives magnificently – must be driven to be believed – drives straight as an arrow with no strange road wobbles, shakes or rattles – a truly remarkable daily driver that will give any modern day car a run for it’s money!

This is a rare opportunity to own a great daily driving and never abused example of an obviously always garaged and rust free 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan convertible in very fine condition throughout! Although obviously not a concourse example, this remains a very rare and highly desirable and collectible unabused example of one of the most rare and outstanding designs of the late forties and early fifties, these high quality luxury cars were built to be able to complete long distances both quickly, powered by Ford’s larger version of it’s faithful flathead V8 and in the utmost of luxury!

This is one very desirable car for any classic American car enthusiast or collector to add to his collection a very honest and unabused example and a sure-fire investment that’s sure to appreciate over the years for any classic American car collector!

Rare Hot Rod Magazine Cover Car

Any car that appears on the cover of Hot Rod magazine is automatically famous. At the Amelia Island Concours, which is one of the top classic car shows in the United States, they have created a class in the last two years of strictly cars that have been on the cover of Hot Rod. A few things can be noted when a car is on the cover of a historical Hot Rod magazine. The first is there were only twelve cover cars every year and Hot Rod magazine was very particular about the cars that would appear on the cover; they were always fabulous cars. The second is that because these cars become so famous in today’s market place the value goes up tremendously. Third, any car that appeared on the cover of Hot Rod magazine will always be invited to every prominent Hot Rod show.

The T-bucket that you see in this ad is one of those cars; it is the 1925 T-Bucket with a short bed that appeared on the cover of Hot Rod, March 1959. It was built by a 17 year old named Terry Sweem who took two and a half years of his young life to build the car. This bucket was considered the epitome of all T-buckets and had the best combination of everything. An Olds hydro combo with a bored out 303 Olds engine and was only 30 inches tall to the top of the door. The body was channeled over the frame with such unusual features as cycle fenders that turn with the wheels, a 33 DeSoto grille, a 39 front and rear Ford axle, tri-powered carburetion, working turn signal, electric windshield wipers, rear tires, 820 x 15 Firestone wide whites, front tires 750 x 15 Firestone wide whites.

The car has working hi-lo beams and directional’s and an instrument panel cluster from a 1950 Olds along with a 1950 Stewart Warner tach and working emergency brake.

Today the car still has all these original items that were put on it in the mid 1950’s and even has the original interior that was put in the 50’s in near perfect condition. As compared to today’s cars this car is considered as light as a feather and with the power that comes from the torque of a tri-power Oldsmobile engine and a beefed hyrdo it sends it down the quarter mile in a very exhilarating way. The car also makes an excellent trip car for the longer tours.

A few modifications have been made on the car for today’s conveniences such as an alternator, hidden electric fan and an expansion tank on the radiator. There is also a fuel cell in the bed along with the battery. The paint was redone around 1990 and as recently as last year everything on the car was brought up to date for long distance touring such as all bearings serviced, u joints serviced, all brake fluids flushed and replaced along with the cooling system. New electric fuel pump and change of spark plugs.

This car started its hot rod customized life in California, went to Arizona, Jackson, MI and then Wisconsin. The car was always kept in heated, enclosed garage space and it shows it. You can tell this by the car having a 65-year-old original interior that it was well cared for and in fantastic condition. When you sit in this car you are positioned to look down and over the chromed carburetors quite a sight while the wind whips over your head. It is rumored that in its early life the car turned the quarter mile in 13+ seconds.

For the serious hot rod custom car collector around the world a car like this comes up once in a lifetime. It is believed in the history of eBay only 2-3 times has a Hot Rod cover car come up for sale.
